San Juan : “Shark Wreck”
This recently re-discovered Trans Island fishing vessel turned cargo vessel is a mere 17m/55ft long wreck reportedly carrying cigarettes and whisky. She sank 3miles off Glovers Island (a former whaling station) and is now home to numerous nurse sharks. The nurse sharks are usually in vast quantities, and vary from 3ft to 9ft. Lobster, King crab, turtle, French Angel fish, and goliath grouper have all been seen on this wreck more than once, but even if you don’t see these, trust us, the sharks alone are enough!! The wreck of the San Juan now lies in 28m/92ft to the sand and she lies on her starboard side. Explore inside the cargo hold for larger sharks dozing away from the strong currents, and check out under the propeller where lobster often hide from the sharks themselves!!
Dive Master Notes
Due to the size of this vessel and the strong currents that can be found a negative descent is recommended for this wreck. As she lies 28m / 92ft to the sand with a strong Atlantic current it is easy to miss the wreck, and there is nothing much else to see around but conch!!After the direction and strength of current is determined the captain will drop in the east or west accordingly, allowing divers to drift onto the wreck with the current. It is due to this that San Juan is an Advanced open water dive or proof of deep dive experience is required.
