Hema 1
Hema 1 is a freighter located 3 miles off the south coast of Grenada.
She sank on March 5th 2005 on her way back to Trinidad from Grenada
having offloaded its cargo in St. Georges harbour. This German built
vessell was an iner-island freighter registered origionally in
Kingstown, St. Vincent. Hema 1 is 50m/170ft long and she lies in
30m/100ft of water. She started taking on water in high seas on the
Atlantic side of the Island, Hema 1 tried to turn around but the efforts
were thwarted and she was abandoned. Here, the Grenada coast guard
stepped in to rescue the crew members. Hema 1 joins The King Mitch and
San Juan as another of Grenada's "must see" attractions for wreck
thirsty divers!
Dive Master Notes
With the stronger Atlantic currents and given her depths, HEMA 1 is for
the eperienced diver. A negative descent is a distinct possibility,
however, if there is no current, it is possible to tie off on the
wreck. A max depth of 30m / 100ft is possible, and HEMA 1 lies on her
port side, and is broken up slightly towards the bow on her descent to
her resting place. Already she is patrolled by Barracuda. Reef and
Nurse sharks are often sighted. The pelagic life is as to be expected
from the Atlantic side and the speed of the coral growth on the ship is
remarkable.
