Grenada provides a third of the world’s nutmeg as well as cloves and mace giving rise to Grenada’s nickname, “The Isle of Spice”. The term ‘black gold’ refers to its nutmeg which is grown prolifically throughout the Island. In a nutshell, Grenada offers a quiet, relaxed lifestyle in truly idyllic surroundings. Grenada is wonderfully laid back and the perfect setting for relaxation. Lush rain forests, palm-fringed beaches, and cascading waterfalls are the order of the day accompanied by green hills clad with plantations of nutmeg and cocoa, cinnamon and vanilla.
The Island of Grenada is only 22 miles/35km long and 12miles/19km wide with a distinct lack of commercialism giving a rural, rustic feeling. The capital, St. George’s is one of the regions prettiest harbours; with a hillside cluster of French and English colonial buildings. Grenada’s population is around 100,000 people, including it’s dependencies of Carriacou and Petit Martinique. Grenada is an independent state within the British Commonwealth and has the British Monarch as head of state.
